Strategies for Reading Comprehension

  2. Skim the text for main ideas
  3. scan the text for specific information
  4. guess when you aren’t certain

Ø  learners can use guessing strategy to

o     guess the meaning of a word

o     guess a grammatical relationship

o     guess to discourse relationship

o     infer implied meaning

o     guess content messages

  1. Capitalize on discourse markers to process relationships

Ø  Enumerative à firstly, secondly, … one, two,… a, b, … next, then, …

Ø  Additive à again, also, moreover, furthermore, by the way,….

Ø  Logical sequence à so, so far, overall, thus, therefore,  in short, …

Ø  Explicative à namely, in other words, better, …

Ø  Illustrative à for example, for instance, …

Ø  Contrastive à alternatively, on the other hand, instead, on the contrary, …

 

PRINCIPLES FOR DESIGNING EFFECTIVE AND INTERESTING READING LESSONS

  1. The reading materials are interesting for the students

Ø  Teachers should provide authentic materials in the reading lessons

  1. The major activity of the reading lesson is students reading texts

Ø  Teachers should have students do actual reading during the lesson

  1. Activities and exercises reflect the purposeful, task-based interactive nature of real reading.

Ø  Each lesson should have some specific objective.

Ø  Predict the story from the heading

Ø  Predict the paragraph from the topic sentence

  1. Activities and tasks allow the learners to bring their knowledge  and experiences to the reading passage

Ø  Apply K-W-L

o     What do I K now?

o     What do I W ant to know?

o     What have I L earned?

  1. Instructional activities have a TEACHONG rather than a testing focus.

Ø  The whole idea of teaching reading is to instruct our students how to understand students unfamiliar texts.

  1. A variety of different reading activities are used during each lesson.

Ø  Do the activities before, during and after reading.

  1. Lessons should be divided into pre-reading, during reading and post reading

Ø  Teachers should introduce the lesson objective to the students at the beginning of the lesson

1.   Pre-reading

o     Reading fast

 

2.   During reading

o     Read the reading passage

o     Take notes

o     Predict the meaning

o     Min-mapping

 

3.   Post reading (follow-up activities)

o     Comprehension check

o     Discussion
